My favorite foam roller story comes from a client who came to me for workouts. We were doing walking lunges on her first workout, and I noticed her range of motion was very limited, especially on the right side. There was no history of previous injury or surgery to the area, but the client said "it has always popped". She explained that getting items from a low cabinet at home had been painful for her, and had been for as long as she could remember. She assumed surgery would be the only way to ease her pain. After workout I asked her to stay a few minutes and use the foam roller with me. In a nutshell, we used her own body weight to roll on the round foam roll, massaging away restrictions to normal soft-tissue extensibility. When pain was reported, we stopped rolling and RESTED on the painful areas for 30-45 seconds.

The next week this same client came to me in tears! She was so elated the pain and popping were gone...and she even managed to go hiking with her family...something she wouldn't have thought of doing before!
